David Andrew Warner (born 27 October 1986) is an Australian international cricketer and a former captain of the Australian National team. This attacking left-handed opening batsman always makes the headlines for his record breaking runs in international circuit as well as in the IPL. Warner is seldom seen dominated by or under pressure while playing any bowler which is exactly why The Ashes 2019 enthralled the spectators.
Ashes 2019 witnessed something unusual when David Warner making his return in international test cricket after facing a ban of 1 year got out to Stuart Broad 7 times in the same series. Warner, who averaged a meagre 9.33 in the series, became the first opener in a Test series to be out for eight single digit scores. Also, only on five other occasions had a bowler dismissed a player seven times in a single series.
Yes! this curiosity of What? Why? How? made me analyse 3 of his 7 dismissals by comparing it with the Ashes 2018 season against the same bowler while playing the same kind of delivery.
Dismissal 1 :
- Warner's eyes are not on the ball
- No foot movement leading to huge gap between bat and pad
Whereas, when he played the same kind of delivery back in Ashes 2018 we can see the difference right away.
Dismissal 2 :
- Eyes not on the ball
- Stuck at the crease
- Unsure about playing or leaving
Dismissal 3 :
- Head drops too low and is not stable while playing the delivery
- Stuck at the crease once again due to no foot movement leading to Leg Before Wicket (LBW)
Similary, when he faced the same kind of delivery in Ashes 2018 he was more stable with proper foot movement.
Warner making his comeback into international Test cricket looked tentative and psychologically not at his best which was quite evident from the analysis. Coming into this series Broad had only removed Warner five times in 525 deliveries since 2013 with Warner averaging a massive 65.60.
Out of the 7 dismissals of Warner, 4 of them were In swinging deliveries from Broad and 3 were Out swing deliveries in and around the same area.
Nothing can be taken away from Stuart Broad as well, who continuously bowled in the good length area from around the wickets. I believe his dismissals were more Technical then just psychological, making mistakes which we do not see often from Warner.
To the cricket fanatics out there, would like to know your perspective on this analysis as well !!
